Professional experience

Jul 2025 – Present

Capgemini Engineering

High-Integrity Software Unit

Software & Systems Engineering Lead

  • Member of the senior management team of the High-Integrity Software Unit (former Altran-Praxis business). Contributed to technical leadership, business development and client engagement.
  • Assessed IEC 61508 compliance of a SIL 3 defence platform across systems, hardware and software. Recorded the findings in a DOORS compliance matrix and formal report, and tracked evidence gaps.
  • Developed a risk-based assessment methodology for complex pre-existing COTS hardware in high-integrity embedded platforms. Performed assurance evaluations and issued a report to the client as part of the overall safety argument.
  • Led the successful technical and commercial proposal for a Rolls-Royce engine-monitoring software programme worth approximately £0.5m. Provided Engineering Executive oversight during delivery.

Seconded to Rolls-Royce SMR in Derby since January 2026, providing consultancy on the Reactor Protection System within the Programmable Safety Systems team.

  • Developed Reactor Protection System requirements and architecture. Worked with the wider C&I team to define system boundaries, interfaces and the allocation of safety functions.
  • Evaluated supplier platforms through proposal reviews, technical discussions and formal scoring. Reviewed failure hazard analyses.
  • Developed Simulink models to examine safety-function behaviour, including sensor faults, voting, timers and sequencing. Used the findings to clarify requirements in IBM DOORS.

Mar 2024 – Jul 2025

Lorillion Limited

Coventry

Programme Chief Engineer / Acting Engineering Director

  • Led technical governance and architecture across software, electrical, systems and safety engineering. Managed engineering changes, supplier evaluations and customer priorities.
  • Led megawatt-scale modular charging development for an Artemis Technologies electric ferry. Turned customer needs into agreed requirements and a physical architecture.
  • Directed marine battery functional safety and software validation. Defined the scope of hazard and failure analysis and a compliance path against IEC 62619 and IEC 61508.
  • Served as Acting Engineering Director for six months. Recruited staff and established engineering processes, tools and ways of working.
  • Created and introduced hazardous-voltage working policies with a specialist safety provider. Organised risk assessment, team authorisation and training.

Mar 2023 – Mar 2024

TAE Power Solutions Limited

Solihull

Chief Engineer – Control Systems

  • Led a 16-person UK and Czech team responsible for control system and software development for a distributed battery and power-electronics platform. Its cascaded H-bridge design combined inverter, DC-DC and high-power charging functions.
  • Resolved control-architecture choices, including the split between local and central controllers. Clarified the DC charging strategy.
  • Introduced architecture decision records and engineering workflows using Jira, Bitbucket and Confluence.

Jul 2013 – Mar 2023

Changan UK R&D Centre Limited

Solihull

  • Head of Powertrain Software Department 2021–2023
  • Lead Engineer – Transmission Control Leader 2018–2021
  • Lead Engineer – Control Systems Team Leader 2016–2018
  • Principal Engineer – Control Systems Team Leader 2013–2016

Engineering leadership

  • Led 22 staff across controls, software and verification. Managed recruitment, budgets and delivery plans with UK teams, suppliers and senior management in China.
  • Rebuilt a struggling software-supplier relationship and maintained major delivery milestones. Clarified deliverables, brought MIL/HIL testing in-house and set expectations for code quality, documentation and defect tracking.
  • Introduced Polarion and GitLab for requirements, version control and CI/CD. Improved onboarding and introduced systems engineering methods under Automotive SPICE.

Selected technical achievements

  • Delivered control software for the 7-speed DCT and iDD P2 plug-in hybrid DCT into volume production. The software covered transmission control, hybrid supervisory control and energy management.
  • Developed a clutch-temperature observer using instrumented transmission data. This supported removal of an oil-temperature sensor, with estimated savings of approximately £3m annually.
  • Adapted a competitor transmission to run the Changan controller. This enabled early integration and comparative testing, with an estimated six-month schedule benefit.
  • Developed a bilingual Python tool that cut transmission setup and calibration from one–two days to under 30 minutes. It became the specification basis for the factory end-of-line configuration tool.
  • Characterised hydraulic-valve behaviour from −30°C to 110°C. Introduced dither control that improved response by an order of magnitude.
  • Led the ASIL C architecture for Changan’s first internally delivered ISO 26262 project. Reviewed and approved the HARA and safety concept, including independent monitoring and hardware supervision.
  • Oversaw ECU integration and verification on HIL and powertrain rigs. Established and revised hazardous-voltage safe systems of work, risk assessments and team authorisation.
